Abstract

Abstract

This study examined the baseline competence, project and workplace-internship readiness, learning preferences, and career orientation of Grade XI Accounting students using a survey-based diagnostic assessment. The study adopted a cross-sectional descriptive-comparative design with quantitative analysis supported by simple thematic coding. All 65 students who completed the assessment were included, consisting of 34 students from XI AK 1 and 31 from XI AK 2. Data were obtained from self-report scales, one project/internship-readiness item, five brief objective questions, learning-preference and post-graduation items, and open-ended responses. Reliability coefficients for the learning experience, motivation, English, and accounting scales were α=.70, .63, .86, and .89. The overall objective score was M=4.69 (SD=0.64), whereas project/internship readiness was M=3.25 (SD=0.94). XI AK 1 showed significantly stronger readiness, English competence, and accounting competence than XI AK 2. Readiness was positively associated with motivation, English competence, and accounting competence, but not with the brief objective score. Working while continuing higher education was the most common plan, chosen by 36 students (55.4%). These findings suggest that strong basic-concept scores do not necessarily indicate readiness to perform vocational tasks. Diagnostic survey results are therefore most useful when followed by performance assessment, observation, feedback, and career guidance.
